July is National Ultraviolet Safety Month. This month is designed to shine a light on the risks of UV rays and spread the message of sun safety. UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer in the US. It can also cause eye damage including cataracts and macular degeneration. Do you want to cut your risk of skin cancer? There are several ways you can use technology that will help you monitor your sun exposure, and when the conditions are right to have fun in the sun. Here's what you need to know: Several mobile applications are designed to assist with UV safety and sun protection, providing features like UV index monitoring, personalized recommendations, and sunscreen reminders.
UV index monitoring apps
SunWise UV Index: This free app by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides location-based UV index information and color-coded hourly forecasts, making it easy to identify peak UV times.
SunSmart Global UV App: A free app developed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), this app provides localized five-day UV forecasts, highlighting times when UV radiation will be highest.
UVIMate — Sun Safety Coach and UV Index Forecast: This app offers real-time and hourly UV index forecasts, vitamin D time intake, recommended SPF, and a sunburn control timer. It's available on both Android and iOS and supports smartwatches.
UVLens — UV Index Forecasts: This free app provides personalized sun protection recommendations and sunscreen reapplication reminders. It is available for both Android and iOS.
Sunbeam: UV Index: This app offers a comprehensive UV index experience with features like hourly forecasts and skin type-based recommendations.
Sunscreen reminder apps
REAPPLY: Sunscreen Timekeeper: This app helps you set reminders for sunscreen reapplication.
spf.today - Sunscreen Tracker: This app offers features like a sunscreen reminder, the ability to track sun exposure, and integration with Apple Health and Apple Watch.
SunCare: UV & Sunscreen Alert: This app provides personalized sunscreen reminders based on your skin type, activities, and preferred products.
Wearable UV sensors
Sun-a-wear system: This system includes a portable sensor that clips onto clothing and syncs with an app to measure UV rays, track your total radiation dose, and provide personalized recommendations. The app also reminds you to reapply sunscreen and allows you to manage up to four sensors simultaneously.
These apps can be valuable tools for managing sun exposure and reducing the risk of UV-related skin damage. Remember to consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice and recommendations regarding sun protection practices. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
