With election season in full swing, political campaigns have poured over $80 million into AI-generated ads. Research from the Wesleyan Media Project shows a massive surge in AI political advertising—jumping fivefold from just 33 ads in May to 164 by September.

Even worse, nearly 70% of these ads carry no AI disclaimer or label, leaving voters to figure out what's real and what's fake on their own.Whether it’s a clip of political rivals gardening together or a candidate claiming they raised your tolls, fake media is designed to trigger emotional reactions and sway your vote. Here is your quick guide to spotting AI deepfakes in seconds so you don't get played. Here's what you need to know:

5-Step Deepfake Detection Checklist

When you see a shocking political video on social media or TV, run it through these five quick checks before believing or sharing it:

1. Check the Face and Audio

AI visual generation has come a long way, but it still leaves distinct digital artifacts. Look closely at the subject:

Eyes & Blinking: Is the blinking natural, or is it rigid and unnatural?

Mouth & Teeth: Are the teeth blurred or "mushy"? Do the lips sync perfectly with the spoken words?

Skin & Lighting: Does the skin look overly smooth, plastic, or mismatched with the background lighting?

2. Hunt for Fine Print

Because there is no uniform federal law requiring AI disclaimers, state rules vary widely.

Pause the video during the first few seconds.

Scan the corners or bottom of the frame for subtle tags like "AI-generated", "Digitally altered", or small text disclaimers that disappear quickly.

3. Verify with a Second News Source

If a candidate actually made a bizarre, shocking, or illegal statement on camera, major independent news outlets would be covering it continuously.

Search the headline or claim on a standard search engine.

If no credible media sources are reporting on it, you are likely looking at a deepfake.

4. Go Straight to Official Channels

Check the candidate’s official, verified website or official social media accounts.

Is the full context of the video posted there?

If the outrageous clip only exists on obscure social media accounts or forward chains, treat it with extreme skepticism.

5. Pause and Check Your Pulse

Deepfakes and "slopaganda" (hyper-exaggerated AI propaganda) rely on instant emotional reaction.

If a video makes you instantly furious, pause before reacting.

High outrage drives quick shares, which is exactly how misinformation spreads. Take a breath, verify the source, and report fake or misleading posts using the three-dot menu on your social media platform.

Watch Out for Election Scams and Links

Viral political fakes often serve as bait for phishing scams. Be cautious around viral political videos accompanied by calls to action such as:

"Watch the full uncensored video here"

"Sign the emergency petition"

"Donate $5 right now to stop this"

These links often lead to lookalike websites designed to collect your credit card info or personal data. Stick to official campaign donation pages and verified organizations.

Staying informed in today's digital landscape isn't about red vs. blue politics—it's about protecting your vote from digital manipulation. When any voice or face on your screen can be generated in seconds, a cool head and quick verification are your strongest tools. Before you hit share on that next viral clip, take a breath, double-check the facts, and make sure you're the one in control of your vote on Election Day.
