Your mom probably knows a lot about the internet, online shopping, and social media, but she probably needs some tips on how to spot a scam or post information online that she shouldn’t. You should also consider introducing her to some technology that will help her feel safe and secure at home. Whether your mom is using a phone, a tablet, she just wants to share her photos with her friends and family on her special day or wants to have a worry free home, you should take time on her special day to help her get the most out of technology. Here's what you need to know.

To keep your mom tech-safe this Mother's Day, focus on education, practical security measures, and simplifying her tech usage. Educate her about common scams and online threats. Implement strong passwords, encourage software updates, and consider a home security system or smart home devices for monitoring. Finally, help her use technology in ways that are easy and intuitive for her, like voice assistants or simple alert apps.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Help Your Mom Build Her Human Firewall. Cybercrime is a human problem. 99% of all cyber attacks require human interaction, which means as long as she's not clicking on links in emails and text messages, she will stay safe from cyber threats.

  • Discuss Scams. Talk about common phishing attempts, fake e-cards, and online scams, especially targeting the elderly. Get her into the mindset of not trusting anyone when it comes to emails, phone calls, and text messages. Either be a resource for her to call or connect her with a tech-savvy buddy who can answer any cybersecurity questions she might have.

  • Cyber Security Basics. Explain the importance of stopping the process of using passwords and helping her migrate to using passphrases to keep her online accounts safe from breaches. Also, she needs to know the importance of enabling two-factor authentication on all of her online accounts, especially her social media accounts she uses to stay in contact with friends and family.

Set up Practical in Home Security Measures:

  • Home Security. Install a smart home security system with cameras and motion sensors for monitoring her activities.

  • Emergency Alert Apps. Set up emergency alert apps on her phone that allow her to quickly send alerts to family or emergency services.

  • Fall Detection. Consider a wearable fall detection device if she has any mobility concerns.

  • Financial Security. Ensure she understands how to protect her financial information online, potentially setting up automatic billing for safer payments.
